Living with a chemical imbalance such as Bipolar Type II disorder, does not mean that I “choose” to forego the simple joys of giving myself a spring color mani/pedi in the midst of winter… it simply means that such simplicity holds no pleasure, when in this moment, my view of the world is bleak and distorted. In the psychological depths of despair, darkness is not only the absence of light; it is also without color, perception, and self. Imagine all the stressors you’re currently facing while going about your daily routine of work, minding the children, loving your lover, and trying to be a good friend to your friends… now imagine doing so, all while on your unpedicured hands and feet, scraping your way out of complete sorrow - a sorrow that you can’t even explain because you KNOW you have so much to be grateful for. Depression is not a weakness - not in any man, woman, or adolescent. Its survivors are some of the STRONGEST people I know. So… today I painted my nails.
